Allogenic Bone Marrow Transplant Educational Class
This class prepares patients and caregivers for an allogenic transplant. The class reviews valuable information about what to expect. A tour of the Transplant Unit is included. Your nurse will register you for the class and let you know the date, time and location. This progam is for Bone Marrow Transplant patients only.
Blood Cancers Education Series: A series of presentations on various topics related to blood cancers that are co-sponsored by the Leukemia-Lymphoma Society. Presenters include physicians and nurse practitioners from the Abramson Cancer Center who specialize in treating blood-related cancers, as well as counselors who address psychosocial aspects of living with a blood related cancer. Brain Tumor Support Group: The Abramson Cancer Center of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Division of Neuro-Oncology: Brain Tumor support group for brain tumor patients and their families. The group provides an opportunity for support, sharing, and education. Meets 2nd Wednesday of each month from 6:30 to 8:00 pm in the Neurosurgery Conference Room, 3rd Floor Silverstein Pavilion. Head and Neck Cancer Support Group: The Abramson Cancer Center offers patients and loved ones the opportunity to gain support and information from others with similar experiences and concerns. This group meets the first Wednesday of every moth from 9:45 - 11:45, except August. Classes are located on the 10th floor Penn Tower conference room. Prostate Cancer Support Group: This group offers the latest information about prostate cancer and treatment, and an opportunity to meet with other survivors. This group provides emotional support and strategies for coping. Meetings are held quarterly from 9:30 - 11:30am on the third Tuesday of the month (January, April, July and October), in the Patient and Family Services Conference Room, 1st Floor West Pavilion, Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine. Look Good...Feel Better Workshop: A free program of the American Cancer Society that teaches beauty techniques to women who are actively undergoing cancer treatment to help them combat the appearance-related side effects of radiation and chemotherapy. Classes are taught by licensed cosmetologists who have been specially trained and each woman practices techniques using products donated by the cosmetics industry.

Nutrition During Cancer Treatment: This class is facilitated by a Registered Dietitian, "Nutrition During Cancer Treatment Class" will meet on certain Wednesdays from 3:00 to 4:00 PM int eh Patient and Family Services Conference Room, First Floor, West Pavilion, in the Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine. The side effects of cancer treatment can affect a patient's ability to eat and maintain their nutritional status during treatment. This class will help one prepare for cancer treatments. The topics of discussion include: good nutrition as part of the treatment plan, how to get the extra nutrition a body needs, handing side effedts that interferes with eating, information about vitamin and herbal supplements, and answers to nutrition questions. Nutrition for the Cancer Survivor Class: Facilitated by a Registered Dietitian, this class will meet on Wednesdays from 3:00 to 4:00 PM in the Patient and Family Conference Room, First Floor, West Pavilion, in the Perelman Center for the Advanced Medicine Building. Once treatment is complete, what role does diet play in a patient's recovery. This class will review the current recommendations for nutrition after treatment, incluiding nutritional needs after cancer treatment, diet guidelines for cancer survivors, use os upplements, and answers to nutrition questions. Tube Feeding Nutrition Information Class: This class is for patients who have a feeding tube or who may get a feeding tube as part of their cancer treatment, taught by one of the Abramson Cancer Center registered Dietitians. This program includes: a review of the different types of feeding tubes and how they are placed, how to do feedings through a tube and review of the different ways to do feedings, how to determine when you need to start using the tube, as well as when to stop using it, potential problems associated with the tube and any other questions that you may have about feeding tubes.
Classes are held certain Wednesdays of the month, from 12:00 - 1:00pm, in the Patient and Family Services Conference Room, 1st Floor, West Pavilion, Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine. Nutrition and Diet for Breast Cancer: This class is facilitated by a registered dietitian. Nutrition and Diet for Breast Cancer is held every other month from 2:30 to 4:00PM in the Patient and Family Services Conference Room, First Floor, West Pavilion, in the Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine. Breast Cancer has its own specific diet and nutrition issues, particularly with what foods to eat and how to maintain a healthy weight to reduce the risk of recurrence. This class will address thos eissues and the following topics: how to get the nutrition you need during and after treatment; handling side effects that interfere with eating; benefit of maintaining a healthy weight, foods to include or avoid, and answers to nutrition questions.
