About This Site: Acknowledging the generosity of Cathy Cucco’s family

The Abramson Cancer Center is grateful for the generosity of Cathy Cucco’s family, who donated funds for this website, the aim of which is to further education and research for Paraneoplastic Neurological Disorders.

Cathy Cucco’s Story…as told by her sister Lynda

Cathy Cucco lost her 13 week battle with a paraneoplastic neurological disorder on April 14, 2005

Cathy was in excellent health, when one day just before Christmas 2004, she discovered a lump in her abdomen. Following the ultrasound she was told it was almost certainly a fibroid. Fearful, Cathy insisted that it be removed as soon as possible - surgery was scheduled for January 11th. The surgery revealed that the fibroid was actually a malignant ovarian tumor. Cathy was frightened but relieved by reports that they “got it all.” That relief was quick to fade as the effects of a rare paraneoplastic neurological disorder (PND) began to overtake her body within a week of surgery.

The specific PND that struck Cathy is called anti-Hu associated encephalomyelitis (should link to definition). It began to surface with symptoms of dizziness, difficulty hearing, jittering eyes, vertical double vision, and sensitivity to odors. Soon she was unable to maintain her balance when walking and had difficulty sitting up.

Despite more than 20 treatments, and other efforts aimed at this little known condition, the paralysis that occurred as a result of the neurological damage continued. It began with her sight and hearing, continuing from her senses to her extremities and limbs and involving her autonomic nervous system as well.

Cathy’s last wish was to have her loved ones with her. For 3 months her husband, Mark, and I slept at the hospital on a gurney next to her so that she would have peace of mind. She was incredibly brave. We remember her each day that she is gone.

Our family lost a loving Mother, a cherished Wife, a unique Daughter, a wonderful Sister, and favored Aunt. During my sister’s last days, it didn't matter how much research our family did, there were no answers to be found. We could only watch with intense frustration and disbelief, which is why we have donated these monies to fund this website – we hope to inform persons and families suffering from this disease and bring awareness to the general public.

We wish all patients and caregivers alike, well in their own battles and pray a treatment is found for this disorder.

With love and great understanding,
Lynda
