Unsung Hero: PennCare's Dr. Edward Mea

Edward J. Mea, DO, clinical assistant professor of Family Medicine and Community Health was nominated by one of his PennCare -- Royersford Medical Associate patients and received an "unsung her" distinction from the local BerksMont News. A few years ago, his patient's mammogram came back with suspicious findings and Dr. Mea immediately made an appointment at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. "I don't drive in the city," his patient said, and trying it for the first time under already stressful circumstances was not something she felt up to doing. Dr. Mea did not want her fear of a drive through center city traffic to interfere with her getting the best quality treatment available, so the young docotr put his practice and personal life on hold for one day; he drove the patient himself. "He met me at 1pm and stayed with me at the hospital through all the tests and waiting," she said. Dr. Mea was able to get her medical test results immediately and formulate a plan for treatment without delay. His patient had a mastectomy performed at HUP, but her cancer was not aggressive enough to require chemotherapy.
