In 2006, there were nearly 40,000 new cases of renal cancer in the United States,
with about 13,000 deaths from the disease. Clear cell renal carcinoma
accounts for about 90 percent of the cases of metastatic renal cancers.
About 20 percent of renal masses are benign oncocytomas or fat-poor
angiomyolipomas. Another 25 percent are indolent papillary or
