Basser Resarch Center for BRCA Spreads the Word

October 7, 2013

An educational symposium at Congregation Rodeph Shalom on Sunday brought together physicians and genetic counselors from Penn's Basser Research Center for BRCA along with survivors and "previvors" of cancers related to the hereditary BRCA gene mutations. The event was part of the Basser Center's Jewish outreach campaign, which aims to raise awareness of these cancer-risk gene mutations among those of Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry, who have a 1 in 40 chance of carrying the mutations, which is at least 10 times greater than that of the general population. The event was covered by KYW NewsRadio and CBS3, whose health reporter Stephanie Stahl emceed the symposium.
