Breakthrough in Testicular Cancer Research?

June 29, 2013

In continuing coverage, a Penn Medicine study in Nature Genetics that found four new genetic variants associated with an increased risk of testicular cancer was covered by theJewish Exponent. This brings the number of genomic regions associated with testicular cancer up to 17. "The important take home message about this disease — as opposed to some other diseases – is that a lot of the variance that we find are in regions in which" sperm is eventually developed," said Katherine L. Nathanson, MD, associate professor in the Division of Translational Medicine and Human Genetics. The findings could eventually help scientists better understand which men are at high risk and enable early detection or possibly even prevention of the disease.
