To achieve advances in clinical medicine, investigators with a sophisticated understanding of medicine and pharmacology who are capable of projecting their preclinical research across the translational divide are needed. Such expertise in translational medicine and therapeutics has become scant in academia, industry, and regulatory bodies. Garret FitzGerald, MD, director of the Institute of Translational Medicine and Therapeutics (ITMAT) and Carsten Skarke, MD, instructor, ITMAT, discuss strategies for addressing this deficit in human capital in a commentary in Science Translational Medicine.
