Cancer Rehabilitation Program

Penn's cancer rehabilitation program addresses the needs of cancer patients experiencing symptoms as a result of cancer or cancer treatment. These symptoms may include:

  • Deconditioning
  • Lymphedema
  • Loss of physical function
  • Neurological deficits
  • Pain and cancer-related fatigue
  • Peripheral Neuropathy
The program offers consultations with a cancer specialist and examination services as well as physical therapy services.

Cancer rehabilitation physicians are doctors who specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of the physical effects that may result from cancer and its treatment. These physicians work closely with other cancer specialists to provide you with comprehensive, integrated care.

Penn's cancer rehabilitation specialists are committed to providing you with the best possible care. Because we understand the personal aspects of dealing with cancer, we also focus on providing you and your family with the support you need throughout your care.

Physical, Occupational and Speech therapy services are provided by Good Shepherd Penn Partners; a partnership between Penn Medicine and the Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Network. Good Shepherd Penn Partners provides specialized long-term acute care and inpatient and outpatient physical rehabilitation throughout the Philadelphia region.

Survivor Stories

Alice Thomas
Diagnosed in February 2006 with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma, Alice Thomas has an excellent prognosis and has a loving support network. With her husband, a sergeant in the Marines, stationed out of state, her daily support system has been her two sons, her close girlfriends who have all sung together in church for 26 years, and her elementary school students. In fact, the kids organized a "baseball cap day" at school to express their love when she lost her hair during chemotherapy. In June, she and her husband attended the Abramson Cancer Center's Annual Leukemia, Lymphoma & Myeloma Patient Education Conference. The conference provided invaluable information and support for Alice and her husband as she began her cancer journey.
