Awaken the Dragon Documentary Screening

Testing for Cancer Risk in the Jewish Population: A Community Conversation

Studies show that individuals of Ashkenazi Jewish descent are ten times more likely than the general population to have a mutation in the BRCA genes. Amy Harmon, a Pulitzer Prize winning New York Times journalist, will moderate a panel of medical experts in a lively discussion about this pressing health concern in the Jewish community and will engage the audience in a conversation about the controversial topic of population testing all Ashkenazi Jews for BRCA mutations. Panelists will include Basser Center Executive Director Susan Domchek, MD, Susan Klugman, MD (Program for Jewish Genetic Health) and Rabbi Eddie Reichman, MD (Montefiore). This program is a joint collaboration between the Basser Center for BRCA, the Program for Jewish Genetic Health, and the JCC in Manhattan. Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer Risk – What You Need to Know

A FREE community education event aimed at increasing awareness of BRCA1/2 in the Ashkenazi Jewish community. 1 in 40 individuals of Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry carries a BRCA mutation. During our free March educational event, Rebecca Mueller, MS, CGC, CCRC of the University of Pennsylvania's Basser Center for BRCA, will help you learn who is at risk for carrying a BRCA gene mutation as well as explaining the process of genetic counseling and including the criteria for, and insurance coverage of, the testing. She will also help you develop strategies for talking about genetic risk and test results with family and friends. This program is a partnership between LBBC and the University of Pennsylvania's Basser Center for BRCA. Unveiling of the Homologous Hope sculpture at the Basser Center for BRCA

The Basser Center for BRCA at Penn Medicine's Abramson Cancer Center held a celebration to formally unveil "Homologous Hope," the large-scale piece created especially for the Basser Center by internationally renowned artist Mara G. Haseltine. Weighing over 500 pounds and suspended from the glass atrium in the Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine, the sculpture uses LED lights to illustrate how a healthy cell repairs DNA that causes breast, ovarian, prostate and pancreatic cancers. Created in a ribbon-diagram formation, it is an accurate depiction of the part of the BRCA2 gene that is responsible for DNA repair. Nearly 70 attendees gathered to celebrate the sculpture that represents the hope that the establishment of the Basser Center is giving to countless families and their loved ones. This special event included remarks from Ralph W. Muller, CEO of the University of Pennsylvania Health System, Chi V. Dang, M.D., Ph.D., Director of the Abramson Cancer Center, Mara G. Haseltine, and Mindy and Jon Gray, Founders of the Basser Center. 6ABC and PHL17 also reported on the unveiling of the Homologous Hope sculpture.

The Basser Center for BRCA is leading a national campaign to increase awareness of BRCA1/2 in the Jewish community. Individuals of Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry are disproportionately affected by BRCA1/2mutations, with 1 in 40 estimated to carry a mutation.
